Medicare and Medigap Basics

Medicare is a federally-managed health insurance program. It provides coverage for people age 65 and older, younger individuals with disabilities, and people with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). You can choose to add coverage from a private insurance company to supplement Original Medicare (Parts A and B) coverage.

Original Medicare

Part A

This is the hospital insurance part of Original Medicare. It covers:

  • Hospital stays
  • Skilled nursing care
  • Home health visits

Part B

This is the medical insurance part of Original Medicare. It covers:

  • Doctor visits
  • Outpatient services
  • Other medical expenses
Medicare Supplement plans

Medicare Supplement

Medigap plans

This is additional coverage you can buy from a private insurance company, like AmeriHealth Insurance Company of New Jersey, to supplement your Part A and Part B (Original Medicare) coverage.

Medigap plans help with some or all of the out-of-pockets costs you're left with after Original Medicare pays its share.

Prescription Drug Coverage

Medicare Part D

This is prescription drug coverage. It covers the generic and brand names prescriptions that are listed on the plan's drug formulary list. (Every plan has a different formulary list. You should review each plan's formulary before enrolling.)

If you're interested in learning more about our Part D plans, please call us at 1-866-365-5345.

When can you apply for Medicare Supplement Insurance?

The best time to buy a Medigap plan is during your six-month Medigap open enrollment period. During that time you can buy any Medigap plan sold in your state, even if you have health problems. This period automatically starts the month you turn 65 and enroll in Medicare Part B. After this enrollment period, you may not be able to buy a Medigap plan. If you're able to buy one, it may cost more and you may need to meet medical underwriting requirements.
